VMs: My thoughts on the VMS
My current thinking on the subject of the VMS goes like this. Someone wanted
to get some money for what would appear to be a genuine and mysterious
manuscript. He had seen some of the ciphers used at the time and developed
something similar but with an evil twist. The input text was random
collections of italian text that really meant nothing but would give the
whole thing some language like structure. This was fed in to refine the
encoding method and give it the feel of an unknown language. As the hoaxer
never needed to decipher the VMS all notes and tools were burnt or destroyed
some other way. Anyway he could come up with a 'solution' if needed. This
project probably failed and he lost possession of the manuscript. As he
could not admit the hoax he simply walked away to find a new money making
venture.
The new owners of the VMS feeling quite pleased about the sting then set
about unearthing its 'secrets' and a trail of evidence was started. As the
original author had claimed not to be such he was never contacted again and
now we're all sitting here scratching our heads.
Now if anyone can disprove this then feel free but that is where I am at and
unless someone comes up with something astounding that is probably where I
will stay. I have seen too many things that lead in the hoax direction to
think anything else. It's just a gut feeling.
