What of Porta then? He was very interested in optics. He also had original
ideas on the composition of the natural world. He wrote about ciphers and
even produced work on it. He was already on a black list from the
inquisition. I don't really know whether or not to believe he was
responsible for an early telescope but who knows?
I can't remember the dates that Porta was prevented from working but the
were late 1500s as far as i recall. Judging by the symbols on the ptolomy
universe image these were known at the time. If we look at the Porta table I
posted the link for we also have shapes that look like half gallows. I think
these ideas where more widespread than we think.
