Re: VMs: vms sentences

But until we start producing some facts that people can agree on we are not going to make much progress.

It seems to me that there are at least a couple reasons (probably more) for the paucity of hard facts about the VM on this mailing list:

1. A lot of the claims that are made are stated in an "anecdotal" way. For example, someone will mention triple repetitions of a word, but without indicating how many such repetitions there are, where they are (i.e. all together or distributed), whether there is any similarity among the repeated words etc. Frequently, the claims are in the vein of "maybe this means that", with no further analysis.

2. Possible results are often stated in the context of the writer's particular approach, and not in a way that is immediately useful to someone not pursing the same approach. (I admit, for example, that a lot of the recent traffic about "triplet encoding" and "Cardan grills" went over my head because I did not understand the basic assumptions of those approaches.)

3. Though there is a lot of detailed data (and some information) on various websites, there is no single, incrementally updated repository for concrete results, as is the case with many mailing lists that maintain a FAQ document. As people join and leave the list, the same concepts seem to come up over and over, are "kicked around" for a while with no result, and then fall back into obscurity. Also, with such a document, it might become possible to resolve some of the "Is! Isn't!" discussions that often appear in this list.

Regards,

Bruce
