May I challenge you on this?
Of course!
According to the Beinecke, the VMs' physical size is 225mm x 160mm: and,
according to the rough size of modern sheepskin rugs, I guess you should
be able to cut about 14 VMs-sized folios (or rather, 7 VMs-sized
bifolios) from a single skin. [...] this would point to only about 10
sheep (rather than 30)?
Well, I was wrong, mainly because, in the rush of the writing, I confused
folios and bifolios (see P.S.). I assumed ca. 120 folios (116 numbered +
some folded) and I guesstimated 4 ca. bifolios per sheep, giving 15 (rather
than 30).
Now, realizing that:
a) a bifolio is roughly A4 size (and then your estimate of 7 per sheep is
more realistic),
b) several bifolios come from second choice skin positions,
c) the ms. has 132 folios (counting all the extra, folded, leaves),
it would be possible to estimate even 8 bifolios per sheep giving 132 / 2 /
8 = ca. 8 sheep.
Ciao,
Maurizio
P.S.: maybe, it might be interesting to explain a possible reason for my
folio-bifolio confusion: here south of the Alps, we call a folio _carta_
(or sometime even _charta_) and a bifolio, rather informally, _foglio_ (or
even _folium_); so, I possibly thought of the 116 folios as 116 _folia_
(=bifolios). mmg
