VMs: Re: DATING Counting sheep
OLDEST possible date?
not a fan of a vms hoax... (~ES pre-touched steve~),
I've got 1 or 2 too many cats here I would SKIN for the answer, (well
@ least 1 (of 5) (not including local walk-by Feral(s)) :-)
(BTW) - I'm training/teaching them to use the People LOO without
litter/sand, we'll see come spring :-) 3 of 5 are learning :-)
(hey, IT can happen :-))
okey Ok ok.. I _like the cats_ :-0 ~rats~
but I DON'T LIKE stepping on their tails in the Black of night!!!
rethinking/Additionally,
locally I have St. Mary's Glacier that I have found 1000's? 10,000's?
Millions of YEARS OLD? layers of peleo forest volcanic/FIRE residue.
-HAND DUG- by me... anyway my CATSKIN (pick one) has ancient ash
(carbon black)INK written on (_next_ CATskin) IT? - CAN WE Date it?
yes 1950+? (atomic fallout) exempted :-( (1945 sounds better?)
answer = today (OLD ink _whatever_) WE HAVE TO STOP the list SPITE.
THE VELLUM (skin) is a _closer_ date?!! (& Older than you think!)
1 (ONE) sample 1/4 - 1/8th inch/30 gram)?) (not 1-30 sheep)
This current VMS is being disseccceTed beyond, the/& into ~dust~.
No wonder YALE won't let 'us' in there (ha.ha)..
IT CANNOT BE OLDER THAN THE SKIN! (vellum.period!). even if written
yesterday.
How OLD can this (skin/vellum) be?
That was my original question.
best to you & yours

steve (IT'S _NOT_ a Hoax!) ekwall
ps: FOLD your (UNdoit) KEY!
EACH Character(s) SPEAKS/TELLS ALL :-)
pss: my neighbor has "cow-calves" for hide/vellum. FWIW
psss: (cats):i haven't skinned 'em YET, but I think the Boys have
tougher THICKER hide then the Girls (ref: cats (above))...

Hi Barbara,
At 12:15 28/02/2004 +0000, Barbara Blithered:

Errm... while I'm sure that was true in the early medieval period, I got
the impression that "parchment" later came to denote"single-sided skin" and
"vellum" "double-sided skin".
*sigh* I wish we were certain about even the most basic things. :-(
Presumably, the thinner the VMs' vellum, the younger the kids/lambs/calves
it came from - and so Maurizio's estimate should perhaps be refined to
circa (say) 30 lambs?
So, the thinner the vellum, perhaps the most expensive it would have been?
Hmmm.... :-o
Cheers, .....Nick Pelling.....
