RE: VMs: Blanks

Admittedly, I scanned through this thread quite quickly so may have missed
any comments regarding the fact that so many of the 'words' created by being
enclosed in blanks end up as labels too. If blanks aren't separateds of a
unit - then why do labels appear as whole units?

One might just as well ask "why are many labels so unreasonably short?" The use of labels will destroy just about any theory for the VMs, so it's a blunt instrument that should be wielded with care. :-o

BTW: has anyone specifically compiled a list of quantitative differences between labels and text? Can you reliably guess whether the labels on a page are (for example) Currier A or B? What patterns do you find often in labels but only rarely in text ("y+gallows" at word-start springs to mind)? I don't recall seeing a page on this, but would be delighted to be proved wrong! :-)
