I agree with Nick that it's probably a Renaissance
creation. The imagery is really neither medieval or
Renaissance.
I think this points out the weakness of many arguments based on details
of nymphs or castles, hairdos, flowers, and so on: this manuscript
resembles a lot of things but not very much. It's really _sui generis_,
and I think it is more likely to be a one-off, written for one of many
possible reasons (a joke, a game, to sell, or just for the joy of doing
it), and not the only surviving example of a class of such objects.
Sure, you can go out fisihing and catch a coelecanth, but I doubt that
is what this is.
