This kind of argument inverts our actual situation for rhetorical purposes. 
The question we're actually answering is this: "What is this strange fish 
in our nets?"

If you were instead to point out that the more one-off any explanation 
becomes, the less likely it is to be true, I would of course agree with 
you. However, we now have a whole constellation of evidence - both 
statistical and otherwise - that any explanation needs to reconcile: and 
marginalising the VMs as a jeu or a canard is just an art historical 
version of the hoax assertion.

As with all explanations, the question then becomes: "How can you tell?"
