Don't forget that at least two different types of coelacanth have been found (one population in Comoros Islands and South Africa, the other in Indonesia), as well as (possibly isolated) catches in Mozambique, Madagascar and Kenya. Is it really 'sui generis' any more?

I guess what you're saying with the VMs is that in time - as with the coelacanth - other related objects from its family might well surface [*], giving us additional context to work with. However, I suspect you have a long (if not perpetual) wait... though I'd still be delighted to be proved wrong! :-)
