Sounds like John Crowley's short novella "Great Work of Time"; the man 
was part of an organization that used time travel to preserve the 
British Empire. When he goes into the future (for the first time; 
they've always gone into the past before), he finds that his group's 
tinkering has caused radical unexpected changes-- including the 
existence of intelligent humanoid reptiles that are used as domestic 
servants...
