Re: VMs: Smithsonian Botanical Symposium, 6th-8th May 2004
Hi Nick
Hmm - that paper is really about symbolism not synaesthesia; the rose
(and its scent) as complexly symbolic....
But also of note is that the VMs conatins nothing which looks like a
rose, or does it?
Cheers
William

Hi everyone,
Here's a nice looking conference (just posted up on PharmWeb) in
Washington, with the first two days devoted to the history of botany
and horticulture. The first listed author is an expert on Arabic and
Persian agricultural manuals, and discusses the rose as synaesthesia:
the second discusses Ottoman gardens and their relation to Byzantine
gardens, etc. Interesting stuff! :-)
Cheers, .....Nick Pelling.....

"Botanical Progress, Horticultural Innovations, and Cultural Changes":
Smithsonian Botanical Symposium 2004, in collaboration with Dumbarton
Oaks and the United States Botanic Garden, Washington DC, May 6-8, 2004.
In order to analyze the potential impact on the fields of botany and
horticulture of modern changes in scientific and cultural practices,
presentations at this symposium will offer broad perspectives,
relating large botanical and horticultural changes to the cultural,
social, economic, and political context throughout history. The
contributions of botanical and horticultural changes to very different
domains of culture and social practice, such as medicine, religious
practices, eating habits, taste for exoticism, production and use of
perfumes, conspicuous consumption, and social distinction, will also
be examined.
Attendees will be able to register for the Dumbarton Oaks sessions
(May 6 and 7), the Smithsonian session (May 8), or both.
