I am very skeptical about any theory that assumes
spaces could be arbitrary, or inserted deliberately
in the wrong places.
I have not yet heard a good argument why this should
be so.
If it is a ciphertext using a verbose cipher, then splitting pairs might
usefully serve to make that verbose cipher less visually obvious.
If it is a plaintext based on Japanese or Thai (any others?), then
splitting pairs might usefully serve to beautify the text.
Otherwise... random scribal error?
I have seen several arguments why spaces
seem honest separators of words (or other units)
I agree that this probably explains ~nearly all~ Voynichese spaces: but I
remain unsettled by these spaces apparently inserted inside <ol> and <or>
pairs. We'll need some evidence to quantify this more exactly.
Cheers, .....Nick Pelling.....
