Re: VMs: Beinecke & MrSID...

Hi Claudio,

Here's a direct link to the SID file in question: you can get this by clicking on Copy Shortcut (or whatever) on the zoom button, and editing out the JavaScript wrapper to leave the filename:-
http://130.132.81.137/PATREQIMG/sids/D0521/1013391.sid

As to why they'd prefer it to PNG etc: 3279 x 4566 x 24-bit RGB = 44915742 bytes, while the .sid file size is only 2.5MB - ie, it's compressed about 18:1, and the quality is excellent. By way of comparison, JPEGs tend to start exhibiting occasionally ugly artefacts around 10:1 - 12:1.

Probably the most suitable compressor would be JPEG2000, but that's a standard that's still (well) "settling down", and libraries tend (understandably) to be quite conservative in their choice of compression technology.

BTW, LizardTech also released (IIRC) a Java viewer for MrSID files, which should work fine under Linux (if somewhat slower). Might be worth trying to dig up, though.

Cheers, ....Nick Pelling....
