VMs: Re: Re: RE: High-Quality Images Page
Yes, very much a dream come true, and the observations will most probably
fill volumes.... so let me start at the beginning :-) namely, the cover and
its binding. I'm having a very hard time accepting that this is a 17th
century cover. by 1600 there was a booming book binding industry, with
certain accepted standards, many of which it is reasonable to assume that an
individual might attempt to emulate. I'd like to know why this particular
binding is considered 17th century? I doubt I've seen nearly as many old
books as Nick, whose e-mail address tracks to the 3rd stall on the left on
the second floor of the British Library, (reading stall, folks, reading
stall - what were you thinking?) but the binding certainly rings older than
17th century to me. Any examples off the top of anyone's head of other
books with similar binding?
My second observation is that I just can't stop staring at the text.
Details I tried to eek out by comparing several images of similar glyphs are
now very clear, and the old suggestion that certain variations are due to
the roughness of the vellum no longer seems to hold up to consideration.
The number of identifiable "corrections" has also jumped dramatically, and
the 30 or so I've seen so far are all corrections in the shorthand notation.
There's so much to digest - we'll all be very busy for some time to come.
Maybe I've stared at it too long, but I'm now seeing color in the drawings.
I'm gonna have to get my monitor checked, 'cause that just ain't right! :-)
