Re: VMs: More on viewing SIDs

Good. A really stupid question. I'm using IrfanView

minutes to load one of these images, although it
quickly prints it. Is this to be expected with an
image of this size, or do I need more RAM, or more
other resources?

I think that's probably about right, as Irfanview decompresses the whole image before it lets you play with it - by way of comparison, the browser viewer only decompresses what you're looking at.

Note that I would expect you to have to wait at least twice as long to load any fold-out folios - they're not only (say) twice the size, but (IIRC) Irfanview will use a lot of memory for them, probably more than your 128MB of RAM, and so will start to thrash virtual (hard-drive-based) memory.

Luckily CPUs and RAM are now fairly cheap, if you don't mind the trauma of upgrading your PC. :-)

Cheers, .....Nick Pelling.....
