The new scans are not only better, but they are making me look at the documents all over again.
This has probably been noted before, but on sid 1006106 (f17r) Line 7, 4th word. This word starts with an EVA "k", but it is small - the size of normal characters. It is as if the later "p" was drawn first and the k wouldn't fit anymore. Perhaps the reason there are so many "half-spaces" is that the characters are drawn out of order after all. The half spaces are a result of trying to fit characters in after the author drew the initial ones?
For instance, it I tried writing "isth si na aexmlep" but did so in the actual letter order "this is an example". I might misjudge where to start a word.
I never really took the idea that the glyphs might be written out of order seriously until now.
