VMs: RE: Clarification please
Okay, I'll give my usage of those terms and see how they line up
with everyone else's...
page = Folio.. f1r is a page or folio, so is f1v, etc..
bifolio.. is the full sheet of vellum f1r and f1v and f8r and f8v share
one sheet of vellum. (Sometimes bifolio extends to the large foldouts and
several folios are part of it).
quire = A group of bifolios bound together. In the case of the first quire
the outside of the quire is the bifolio consisting of the folios/pages
referred to as f1r/f1v/f8r/f8v. A quire's place in a manuscript is usually
based upon the quire mark found on the last verso page of the quire.. In the
case of the first quire the mark is found in the bottom right of f8v.
pagination actually doesn't happen in the VMS. It's one up numbering of
consecutive pages... so if it existed f1r would have the number 1,
f1v would have the number 2, f2r would be page 3 and so...
foliation/folio numbering was done in the top right corner of all recto
pages whether or not the pages folded in on themselves to create two
folio numbers on one bifolio.
With quiration/quire marks as stated above, you'll find one up numbering
in the bottom right of the last verso page of a quire; One would also
expect - but it isn't necessarily a rule - that all the quires in one
manuscript would be of a consistent size. 8 Bifolios or 16 pages is the
norm for most of the VMS' herbal pages, but when we run into missing
pages/folios,
bifolios, and quires things get a little hard to account for. Luckily, our
foliator was consistent in his marking so we can see where some
pages/folios,
bifolios, and quires certainly did exist. We're also missing a few quire
marks
due to the fact that a couple of entire quires are missing.
John.

Subject: VMs: Clarification please
Barbara Babbles;
Occasionally I'm getting mightly confused and I suspect I'm getting caught
out on meanings again as I did with list usage of "glyph" and "digraph"
(they've different meanings from list usage in the disiplines I was trained
it). I suspect the same thing is happening again :-(
So could someone please define for me the meaning of the following terms *as
used on this list*;
page
Folio
bifolio
quire
quire marks
foliation
pagination
And can someone describe how foldouts were bound in the vms too.
Thanks
Barbara
