Thanks for that Clay. It is yet another nail in the coffin of Gordon Ruggs
argument. I've got my own theory. Let's just pick one of the known
personalities out of a hat. Then select a cipher method of the time and put
them together. Then write a high profile article with no provenance to go on
and hey presto we have a believable theory. I do not wish to unduly
disparage Gordon Ruggs work. It was inventive. But with so little
substantiating evidence it has caused more damage to serious research than
anything else and caused the list to stop a little in its tracks. It is a
side issue.

If Gordon had to put in as much effort on the history, instead of applying a
shortcut, then I would have more faith in his assumptions. He has shown a
method that could stand up to scrutiny and I admire him for that. But to
link it so arbitrarily to a personality without background research is a
disservice to the many that have spent a large part of their lives studying
the VMS.

Show us your provenance Gordon. Then you get the respect.
