A few more points about Edward Kelly:

As far as I can tell, neither Kelly nor Dee practiced alchemy (their 
experience was second-hand). Kelly was
imprisoned because he implied that he knew what to do... but apparently 
he didn't. There are some alchemical
treatises attributed to Dee, but they show signs of having been copied 
from other books-- if Dee actually wrote
them, it may have been an attempt to condense all this information into 
an easily-managable form. I do that
myself once in a while... Anyway, I agree with Adam McLean that the VM 
doesn't look anything like an
alchemical MS, unless it's been cleverly disguised as something else, in 
which case all bets are off.
