VMs: KELLYWatch

Hi Chris and all,

I have no evidence to offer that E.K. really was an alchemist, but the hermetical tradition I am studying since about thirty years tells me that:

1/ Some or let us say many alchemical works are "borrowed" in terms of names (e.g. some Lullian alchemical works are not genuine writings by Lully); but some or many ones are really not and to some extent we here face a modern trend: "Hi guy this looks like Flamel, but I am a learnt man/woman and I can teach you that in fact it is a pseudo/Flamel writing and - since I am moreover graduated as a doctor of Miskatonic University - that the real writer was Dupont of Nemours "(for instance).

2/ J.D. and E.K. truly were alchemists (among others capabilities perhaps) and moreover E.K. possibly was not an honest man;

3/ Here is an example of a treatise attributed to E.K.:

I presently see no absolute reason to doubt this authorship, after all.

4/ VMS does not look like a "common" alchemical MS - and here I agree with Adam Mc Lean and others - which is not enough to warrant people that it is not in fact a work on the Great one. Most alchemical works are not ciphered, there are written in a sort of code envolving text ( the less trustworthy way of delivering the truth ) and emblems (which are said to be more sincere); of course some alchemical books are merely text, and other ones merely pictures...
This is I think an important topic.

I know that the above is not quite satisfactory but here I (sincerely) am at the moment. FWIW.

A few more points about Edward Kelly:

As far as I can tell, neither Kelly nor Dee practiced alchemy (their
experience was second-hand). Kelly was
imprisoned because he implied that he knew what to do... but apparently
he didn't. There are some alchemical
treatises attributed to Dee, but they show signs of having been copied
from other books-- if Dee actually wrote
them, it may have been an attempt to condense all this information into
an easily-managable form. I do that
myself once in a while... Anyway, I agree with Adam McLean that the VM
doesn't look anything like an
alchemical MS, unless it's been cleverly disguised as something else, in
which case all bets are off.
