Re: VMs: Cat-and-mouse (continued)...

Hi everyone,

OK, so it's not Arthur Wyatt-Edgell, then - bit of a shame, but that's the way it goes. :-(

So, going back to the 1901 census: there, all <Mr Edgell>s with a C initial are <Mr Charles Edgell> - and all the ones over 18 are:-

(Name, Age, Where Born, Administrative County, Civil Parish, Occupation)

Charles Edgell, 22, Lambourne Berks, Of Middlesex, Willesden, Bankers Clerk
Charles Edgell, 29, Chew Stoke Lancashire, Bristol, Bristol, Shipping Goods Checker
Charles Edgell, 31, Shropshire Shrewsbury, Cornwall, Mylor, Teacher School
Charles Edgell, 34, Somerset Bishop Sutton, Somerset, Publow Entire, Carter On A Farm
Charles Edgell, 44, Coleford Somerset, Bristol, Bristol, Miner Overman Below

When I went through all the 1901 <Mr Edgell>s last night, none of these (as you can probably see) really jumped out as a strong candidate for WMV's business partner. A 29-year-old shipping goods checker working in Bristol? A 31-year-old school teacher working in Cornwall?

Having said all that, there may be a good reason why WMV's partner was not in the 1901 census:-
(1) perhaps he died suddenly before 31st March 1901 (in which case, we should check earlier censuses (say, 1891), available on microfilm at the Family Records Centre, Islington, London)
(2) perhaps he lived in Scotland or Ireland (which were not part of the 1901 online census data)
(3) perhaps he lived in Deal in Kent (parts of this are missing from the 1901 census data)

Other than that, I've drawn a bit of a blank - oh, well. Perhaps we'll never know who C.A. Edgell, M.A. was. :-|

Cheers, .....Nick Pelling.....
