AIUI, the census here works strictly on a first name / last name basis, so
(FWIW) that shouldn't be an issue here. As an example: my
great-great-great-uncle James Marshall Jose was known as Marshall all his
life, but he's listed in the 1901 census as "James Jose".
Maybe he was an American or Canadian or
...? How many ways are there to spell Edgell? Maybe it was a pseudonym?
Maybe there was no partner, except as an ornament to the firm name to make
it sound less foreign?
You missed out "what if Voynich had POISONED him?" :-O
I'm reminded of a suggestion I once heard that the
first person of any computer product ought to be version 2, to make it
sound like it's been around for a while. The first check in a register is
often 1000!
Ummm... a bit like web counters, which often seem to start just above 1000. :-)
