My views in a nutshell:

"Influence" -- yes; "Control" -- no.

"Ideas being refuted" -- yes; "Ideas being deliberately overlooked" -- no.

These are different things. The last statement implies the notion of 
intentionally subduing opinion/information, though you know better. Not at all 
the same thing as voicing your own conviction.
