Re: VMs: Q. is there a to-do list?
Hi everyone,
As a further thought, I'd say probably the single most useful research task
anyone could do right now would be to go to the Beinecke and carefully
measure the location of (and spacing between) the original binding marks on
all the VMs' bifolios. Many of these are just visible on the sidfiles (for
example, on f1v, the top hole is quite clear), but it is very hard to tell
flecks or marks from holes at the resolution there, especially as the
vellum beneath often shows through the holes.
I believe that a careful analysis of this relatively simple data would be
able to reveal how the individual bifolios were initially grouped, and
hence help move us all towards solid answers to such basic questions as:-
* Were Herbal A & Herbal B bifolios originally bound separately or as
currently bound?
* Were the later Herbal bifolios originally bound in with the pharma pages
or not?
* How many bifolios were in each original quire?
* Were the quire signatures done by the VMs' original scribe(s) or by a
later owner?
* etc
Cheers, .....Nick Pelling.....
