I am not an Arabist either, unfortunately.  I studied Arabic and Persian for
fun in college, but my connections to Arab culture and history are pretty
minimal.  I figured if it looked like the Arabic thing was going anywhere I
would drag in a friend or two who are far better with Arabic than I am.
