AFAIK there are a few algorithms which are "lossy" (like ignoring spaces in the 
plaintext), but of course the loss of information must be so small that with 
some knowledge of the language or contents it's possible to compensate the 
losses when deciphering.

For obvious reasons, strictly irreversible coding schemes (which make it 
impossible to reconstruct the plaintext) only find limited applications.
