VMs: William Romaine Newbold -- to do list

Newbold was one of the first professors of philosophy at Penn. He
didn't publish a great deal, and the story is that he went mad, either
as a result of his obsession with the Voynich manuscript, or vice
versa.

The Rare Book library at Penn is just a few blocks from the White Dog
restaurant, once the home of Madame Blavatsky. The bookseller William
H. Allen got his start in part with the acquisition of Newbold's
library; his first store was located at 3413 Walnut Street in West
Philadelphia, now the site of (among other Penn offices) the Institute
for Research in Cognitive Studies.

Newbold was variously rumored to be a medieval specialist, a
cryptologist, and a Navy consultant. He once lectured at the American
Astronomical Society:

<<Notes of Interest: the Twenty-seventh Meeting of the AAS took place
on Thursday to Saturday, December 29-31, 1921 at the Sproul
Observatory of Swarthmore College, Swarthmore, Pennsylvania, upon the
invitation of the Director, Professor John A. Miller. Attendees were
housed in Parrish Hall, the Main Building and Dormitory of the
College. Because of the winter season, there were no outside
excursions. On Friday evening, Dr. William Romaine Newbold, Professor
of Philosophy at the University of Pennsylvania, gave an interesting
talk, entitled "Evidence Contained in the Voynich Manuscript That
Roger Bacon Possessed a Telescope." >>
