Re: VMs: Is It Time?

Hi, CW

To the degree to which we are all willing to concede
that this group will never gain anything resembling an
agreement on the background or de-encryption of the
VMs, we can certainly forgo these discussions or take
them off-list.

Presuppositions can never be assumed to be identical
from one person to another. And they will never be
understood, let alone reconciled, in the absence of
discussion.

So if we restrict our discussions to exclude our
presuppositions, whoever brings a new idea to the list
about the background of the Vms, its interpretation or
its de-encryption, must also bring the expectation
that his thinking is bound to be summarily discarded
or ridiculed by the larger part of the list, who will
have no means of grasping the presuppositions which
lie behind his work.

We can expand our tolerance of others'ideas by hearing
out the basis of their presuppositions, and if
appropriate, challenging them; or we can adjust our
expectation of being understood by others to virtually
nil. If we have no expectation of finding common
ground with others, why do we frequent this list at
all?

Warmly,

Pam
