I have only glanced at a few RC pages, so I may easily be wildly wrong, but 
in the Western scribal tradition there is the custom to "expunge" 
(_expungere_ from _punctum_, "point, dot") a word mistakenly inserted in a 
text by marking it with dots.

I'm not saying this is the case, but simply that scribal customs are always 
lurking in the dark...
