VMs: Analysis of f67v2
First a side note: my wife and I are going to Chattanooga for the weekend.
I'll answer any questions when I get back.
I'm starting with the assumption that real astronomical events are shown.
Here is my take on the folio 67v2:
The squarish object in the center is the city/town/habitation of the Author,
from which he observed the celestial events described below.
Following the lead of f68r3 (and, I suspect, f68r1 and r2), west is at the
bottom, north to the right, east at the top, and south at the left. The Author
held the manuscript over his head for correct orientation.
The large circle is the horizon. The objects pointing NSEW are trees,
drawn for just that reason. The other four objects are also trees.
The sun is rising behind the tree in the upper left (SE), and setting to the
bottom right (NW). The moon is rising in the upper right (NE) and
setting in the bottom left (SW).
The triangle of planets in the upper left circle is the simplest, and happened
most often. In support of the folio orientation, I point out that this configuration
was most often seen in the morning:
PM
2/28/1419
2/01/1441
AM
7/17/1415
10/19/1451
5/08/1537
5/16/1549
As to the configuration in the upper right, I have run Starry Night over the
15th and 16th centuries several times, and it does not seem to occur as a
morning event. I note it is drawn differently from the other three, but can
offer no explanation as yet.
For the similar configuration in the lower left, I found four times, all in
the evening:
3/15/1419
5/15/1468
10/22/1485
4/17/1588
Now, here's the kicker:
The check mark configuration in the lower right happened twice,
both in the evening:
1/06/1464
7/10/1577
It seems the data bears out the folio orientation.
If the above dates are combined with the Pleiades occultation dates,
an intriguing clustering occurs...
