VMs: RE: Another method different from Cardano Grilles

There are hundreds of sequences of 4, 5, and 6 "words" which are
repeated (once you look past a small percentage of character mutation).

This would not be expected as the output of any system which randomly
generated individual words (such as the pre-mid-suffix wheel system).

There are also relationships between words which are hard to explain
in terms of simple hoax systems.

If the VMs is a hoax, it is not a simple one; it is either a very
complex system, or a combination of a number of simple systems.

One possibility I think we have to admit is that if it was a hoax, no
matter what the primary means of generation was, it is reasonable to
think that (for the sake of time) sections of generated text were copied
from one place to another with small changes made to hide the fact.

Subject: VMs: Another method different from Cardano Grilles

Hi,
I´m Marcelo Dos Santos, from Buenos Aires, Argentina.
I wrote the article kindly quoted by Dana Scott (tnx, Dana!) and the book
"El Manuscrito Voynich" ("The Voynich Manuscript"), to be published by Feb
23rd, 2005 in Madrid by Editorial Aguilar (Spanish only by now, sorry).
I want to direct the attention of the list members to the excelent work
(once again, Spanish only) "Breve ensayo sobre el Manuscrito Voynich"
("Brief essay on the Voynich Manuscript"), by the Spanish astronomer
Francisco A. Violat Bordonau, a member of this list.
Instead of Cardano Grilles, Violat describes there the use of three
concentric cardboard circles, inspired by the three circles surrounding the
Moon´s face as seen on f67r. This cardoard circles carry the prefixes,
midfixes and suffixes (one kind on each circle). Nailed by the center and
allowed to spin freely, you can generate large amounts of voynichese words,
far easier and faster than Cardano Grilles would allow. Violat does not
assign a name to these circles, so I call them "Violat Circles".
You can see the whole Violat essay (.pdf) at
http://personales.ya.com/casanchi/ast/voynich.htm.
I think it worth to take a look, specially the chapter entitled "Mi
hipótesis" ("My hipothesis"), where he describes the construction and use of
the Violat Circles.
He claims he could reproduce, with this simple method, the whole texto on
f67r, and, adding more circles (up to five) he says he could reconstruct the
whole 40,000 words in the VMs.
Of course, his theory (as Rugg´s one, to which I subscribe myself) holds the
idea that the VMs is nothing but a superbly clever hoax, but this astronomer
seems to provide an easy, cheap and quick way to make up such a hoax.
Regards,
Marcelo Dos Santos
