FWIW, I agree completely that this had the character of a map, or at least
a map-like representation.  Whether it represents particular places,
imaginary places, or non-places symbolized as places, the map-like
character of the rosettes and their connections seems obvious.  So there's
certainly no harm in trying to identify the rosettes with actual places.

However, I'm not convinced that the central rosette particularly resembles
St. Marks'!  Perhaps it does resemble Hagia Sophia a bit more, though I
don't see anything else that particularly suggests Constantinople /
Istanbul.
