I know it's a bit of a subtle point to get across, but I'm not actually arguing that it strongly resembles St Mark's: but rather, that the *structure of the view depicted in the central rosette* resembles the *structure of the view looking down on St Mark's Basilica from the top of the Campanile*.


By the same token, it couldn't be Hagia Sophia because (AFAIK) there isn't / wasn't a vantage point over it where that visual structure could be captured (unless Leonardo took a flying machine with him to Istanbul to help him design a bridge <g> ).
