Re: VMs: Updated transcription?

Hi everyone,

for quite some time I wonder, if there have been any attempts to
update the transcription of VMs according to the new sid files. I am
almost sure there have been done some private partial corrections,

any systematic work, at least it was not published on the list. Isn't
it strange? Looking at the new sidfiles, one can immediately see,
that most of the transcription errors and ambiguities could be easily
corrected. The question is - why don't we do it?

The main issue is that of consistency - for example, when it comes to the difference between "o" and "a", there are lots of cases where it's really not clear which is correct. Another issue is whether to transcribe ligatures (ie "Sh" rather than "sh", etc) or not - there really are arguments both ways. And another issue is how best to transcribe not just out-and-out weirdoes, but some of the subtle ligatured "ch" weirdoes you often see.

Before beginning, I would advise putting together a web-page transcription guide, with scaled-up examples of a number of borderline cases, so that all contributors can make difficult judgment calls if not *correctly* (in some absolute sense), then at least *consistently*. What such a guide-line page should say would probably best be debated here... :-)

Of course, once at least some guidelines are in place I'd be delighted to contribute. :-)

Cheers, .....Nick Pelling.....
