VMs: Is the VM... Finnish?

Hi all,

I just wondered which language/culture

*) was geographically close enough to central Europe to explain the overall 
style of the VM,

*) was reasonably different from the Germanic and Romance languages we are 
familiar with to defy simple decryption attempts,

*) and had a poor written record around 1500, perhaps necessitating 
somebody "invented" a writing system for this language.

Finland came to mind. See the Wikipedia's

Perhaps it's really not an encoded book, but some fellow's attempt to write 
down Finnish somehow.

So, is the VM really a Finnish sauna handbook?
