An excellent example that I'd never heard of.

A much safer guess.  I was going way out on a limb based on Voynich's
extrapolated context only.  I'd feel a lot better if the document were
actually subjected to some of the standard analysis normally accorded old
documents of interest, albeit normally these documents have decipherable
text on them and some of the analysis makes use of that.  It ought to be
possible at least to physically date the material to some extent and
determine whether it was a recent forgery, etc.  For example, I suspect
that any rough notebook of the putative period might involve reused
vellum.  What's underneath might help clarify the context of the present
ms.
