Yes. I am not talking about those cases where
there is a clear separate column of separate
characters in front, but I remember that the 
first characters of each line formed a nice
left margin, while the distance between first
and second character of each line was somewhat
variable.

Yes, this would be the suspicion, but it may not have
occurred in a statistically significant number of 
occasions.
