New photographic techniques have made formerly illegible
papyri give up their secrets, which include hitherto unknown
works of Sophochles, Euripedes, Hesiod, and other classical
Greek and Roman luminaries and sub-luminaries.

Thanks, Jim, a really fascinating news story... I can't wait to see what those papyri say! :-)

BTW, I don't believe that Dr Christopher Pelling, the Regius Professor of Greek at Oxford mentioned in the above story, is related to me. I thought I'd say, just so no rumours of a Pelling family conspiracy start leaking out... :-)

FWIW, I think that whatever the actual language or cipher system the VMs will turn out to have been written in, we may also have a layer of well-meaning (but flawed) emendation to contend with. Exactly the kind of multi-spectral stuff mentioned (briefly) above may prove to be just about the only sensible way of telling one from the other... but that's a story yet to be written... :-)

Cheers, .....Nick Pelling.....
