Hi Jean
Interestingly the ebay description for the herbal states
that:
"At the end of each commentary the plant's name is given in Latin, Italian,
Greek, Arabic, German, Spanish and French."
So in 1558 there seems to have been a knowledge of vernacular
naming
across Europe. This may have been a trend much
earlier and pre 16th
century.
