VMs: SIDS Graphics Format

I know I sound like I just fell of the turnip truck, but...

The images of the VMs from the Beinecke Library have a "zoom" format 
available, and the file extension is ".sid". Where can I find 
information on this format??? I tried Google, but I found a bunch of 
sites about some USGS SIDS format that is done in ascii...something 
different.

So what is this ".sid" format for the Voynich???
