It seems to me I have seen Latin manuscripts with an initial illuminated
character containing the rest of the word, like:

********
**         ***
**            ***
** EUS    ***
**            ***
**         ***
********
******

Perhaps that is what the "stretched gallows" characters represent, too. Is there
any pattern to what appears inside a gallows? For example, if "q .. xxxx .. p"
is found, is "pq . xxxx" also found as a freestanding word?
