However, the horizontal stroke of "wu4" should be thinner than the
legs,
but in the VMS the scribe intentinally made it extra thick.
So I would rather think that the original was indeed "tien1",
with the two strokes rather close together (or fused, as
they would be in cursive script); and the scribe misinterpreted
them as "one double-width stroke".
All the best,

I'm really glad, that too you see the horizontal stroke of the
second symbol and too thick. This unproportinal thickness could be a
mishappened second stroke. And yes, cursive writing is a big difference to
printed writing. As I'm a begiiner of Shodo (japanese Calligraphy), I first
tended to copy the original (printing) strokes, but with growinfg
experience. you can write(paint?) faster and thus avoiding to get out of ink
too soon.So most of the strokes will blend together, but can eventually be
distiguished without too much effort (for me at least). So, if there is no
counter evidence,I'll stick to winter-heaven (to whatever this will lead to)
;-)
But another topic:
What if the VMS is neither cipher nor language ?
All the best
