While I agree with you on the increasing pervasion of advertising, eGroups
(which has since become YahooGroups) is extremely good about filtering out
spam: it is trivial to configure such that only members are allowed to
post. I got more spam from voynich@rand than I've gotten from all my
eGroup/YahooGroup usage ever, because the latter was none. Also,
membership does not have to be open, but rather can be the discretion of
the moderator. And finally, for extreme antisociability, groups can be
hidden so they don't appear in the directory of groups.
