In fact, I had to be sponsored to a number of invisible lists, with
behind-the-scenes vetting and voting to decide whether I was admissible

And there's a built-in search engine to assist you in sifting through
the archives.
Below find an example of the 'obtrusive advertising', which is appended
to posts:

That's it.
I don't post html-ized e-mail, so I'm not sure what the ads look like
for folks that do.
Below is an 'Example' of the Yahoo Group information appended to every
post:
Example group archive and information:

Post message: Example_Group@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Subscribe: Example_Group-subscribe@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Unsubscribe: Example_Group-unsubscribe@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
List owner: Example_Group-owner@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Members of the Example discussion group may request the option of
receiving just one e-mail per day. This e-mail will be sent at the end
of each day and will include all of the days comments. Simply send an
e-mail to the list owner (Example_Group-owner@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx)
requesting digest mode.
