VMs: RE: Astrological volvelles in VMS
Perhaps I need to do much further study in the field of calendars
myself. I am currently having some difficulty in understanding
how any system other than that of a 365 day calendar could have
been adopted for any length of time.
Any neolithic stonehendger could line up two rocks to a specific
sunrise and simply count the days between the next occurrence of
that alignment to come up with a 365 day calendar. Yet we see
calander systems ranging from 354 days to 365, as well as others
based on the 13 month moon cycle. The Egyptian calendar mentioned
by Askham has 361 days, which means that in 4 years it would be 17
full days out of alignment. Wouldn't it be very noticeable very
quickly that this system is not in keeping with the seasons and
the movement of the sun? How were such systems justified?
