and Invention in the Middle Ages by Frances & Joseph Gies -
HarperPerennial Books, Division of HarperCollins Pub. 1994. ISBN
0-06-092581-7. This husband & wife team has over 15 books to their
credit in this era of man.

 PS: for more on clocks (and many other medieval machines), check out the 
 very excellent "The Medieval Machine", by Jean Gimpel, New York, 1976. This 
 contains a ton of material not readily found in other sources, and is 
 extremely accessible. It's a good read, too. :-)
