Interesting, yes, they could look like primitive microsopes!
Flat top (optical viewing area) sliding (telescoping) tubes for focus
and explains the "LEGS" on some for STAND OFF study! say plant roots
for example? - 


  Might even explain the ~Weird pictures~ from another world, as the
microscopic ~World~ is strange indeed! 

I also thought the 9-rosette "map page" look celluar in stucture 
(except for that D*rN CASTLE (upper left) (smiles)
