VMs: Conference on Ottoman astronomy and geography...
Hi everyone,
Here's a conference running this afternoon and tomorrow morning at the
University of Michigan, if anyone's here lives fancies attending: it
certainly sounds like good fun to me. :-)
Cheers, .....Nick Pelling.....

On Friday and Saturday, March 21-22, the University of Michigan's Center
for Middle Eastern and North African Studies will host a conference on
Ottoman astronomy and geography.
Friday afternoon there will be talks by Steve McCluskey and Robert
Morrison (astronomy) and Kay Ebel (geographical studies). Saturday
morning, Sara Schechner will present a workshop whose participants will
make replicas of a 1590 Persian astrolabe and an eighteenth-century Ottoman
pillar sundial. Sara has designed some wonderful kits for these
instruments, which the participants may take home for further use and study.
For further information, please contact Ms. Marya Ayyash at the UM
Center, 734 764-0350
