VMs: Regal Eagle
One aspect of the herbal section in the VMS that has been somewhat puzzling
to me is the significance of apparent confusion presented by the "unusual"
additions to some of the herbals. It appears that a number of the herbal
drawings have been twisted and contorted into shapes that only the scribe of
the VMS or close confederates would understand. There is clear evidence of
animal shapes being included in the drawings suggesting a possible interest
in the doctrine of signatures. It has also been suggested that grafting of
various plants may be evinced in the VMS. While these hypotheses may someday
prove positive I sense that a more personal agenda may be proffered.
An examination of the root system in f46v strongly suggests the heraldic
display of an eagle's wing popular in many Coats of Arms. While this may be
unmistakably obvious, perhaps there is more. I have reviewed many of the
banners and flags of Italy and what strikes me as most interesting is that
there is only a single example that most closely matches the roots in f46v:
Novara Province (Piedmont,Italy): (West of Milan)

Now if we take a closer look at the herbal drawing and work our way up to
the top of the plant we can see that the flowers have been arranged into
almost a complete circle which might suggest the crown at the top of this
Coat of Arms. Similarly, the leaves in this plant might correspond to the
laurels branching through the crown. Of course this may be speculation on my
part but it does seems to help explain the "unusual" combination of items
included in the herbals. It might suggest that the scribe of the VMS is
somewhat patriotic and perhaps loyal to a cause. There may be similar
examples and clues in the VMS that could help us focus our sights on the
location of the origin of the VMS, which by this possible 'evidence' appears
to continue to be in Northern Italy.
