Re: VMs: VMS Revisited
Hi everyone,
The same author also points to a similarity between the leaves on VMS f8r
and an illustration from Dryander:-
Another tradition, possibly Persian in origin, was to associate signs
of the zodiac with parts of the anatomy. This was a commonplace
by the 15th century but a combination of this astrological system
with that governing the planting, ripening, picking and application
of medicinal plants would have been a novelty even in the time of
the VMS. It is not a coincidence that many of the anatomical
drawings of the period show dissected organs which, if the
Doctrine of Signatures still applies, looked similar to plants
depicted in the VMS. Compare f8r with the posterior view of the
lung above the diaphragm from Dryander's Anatomiae corporis
humani dissectionis ( 1537 ).
While I haven't found a copy of this image on the web, Dryander's work is
also cited in this interesting paper on "Donne, Vesalius, and the Anatomy
of Body and Soul" by Richard Sugg (University of Southampton) in the
peer-reviewed online journal "Signatures" (it appears as "chapter 3" - note
that this starts on page 40 of 143):-
